The D had no other Office software at the time of installation. When prompted, I entered the product key from the inside of the packaging and waited for validation. Seeing no problems, I continued with the installation, which completed. After a minute, I got an error message saying "the Product Key is Invalid". There is a link for more information, but clicking it brings up a "cannot find server" error. I went through the same procedure as before and got the same results.
Microsoft Office will not activate due to an invalid product key. The product key says Office , the package was previously unopened, yet it does not appear valid and I have no idea why, nor what to do about it. Is there someone within Microsoft that I can chat with to find out why my product key is invalid? Does anyone know how to re-enter the product key? I have had this problem activating Windows 7, but there is a place to re-enter the product key during the activation process.

Is this an "old" computer with a fresh install of Windows from Windows disk or installation file? You can confirm that your software is genuine now I don't know if this link is still working. If the validation check fails, then you are going to have to buy your product again. You should contact the vendor for a refund.
Depending on where they are in the scam cycle they may give you the refund or they will string you along with delays. You should also contact your credit card company to cancel the transaction or to at the very least give them a heads up on the scam so that they can deny the scammer any further sales.

All of the data was erased on the original hard drive and the and a fresh install of windows 7 was performed. Even though I did it, I don't recall whether I reformatted the drive before I installed windows. I think that IO did, because there was a recovery partition on the drive and I wanted to remove it.
There is something that I could try, but haven't. I have several of these Ds that I have rehabilitated and could try installing Office one another one. Since this is a 3 user license, I should be able to install and activate 3 copies. I've got at least 2 more notebooks that don't have Office installed. At the least, I could see if I get the same activation error.

I don't recall the details, but WIndows update would hang and did not automatically install the updates. As far as I am aware, Windows 7 is up to date and Windows update is working properly now. In the typical Microsoft way, here is the problem after I finally talked to support at MS: It seems that the Office I was using was a "volume" version and I needed the "retail" version.
